Groundbreaking Science Emerges from Ultra-Close Orbits of Saturn. The northern auroral oval is slightly smaller and more intense than the southern one, implying that Saturn’s magnetic field is not equally distributed across the planet it is slightly uneven and stronger in the north than the south. Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space telescope have taken a series of spectacular images featuring the fluttering auroras at the north pole of Saturn. Image scale is 63 miles (102 kilometers) per pixel. The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 1.1 million miles (1.7 million kilometers) from Saturn and at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 23 degrees. However, astronomers discovered some subtle differences between the northern and southern auroras, which reveal important information about Saturn’s magnetic field. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on Aug. At the time when Hubble snapped this picture, Saturn was approaching its equinox so both poles were equally illuminated by the sun’s rays.Īt first glance the light show of Saturn’s auroras appears symmetric at the two poles. Check out their website to get descriptions on each of these treatments. The following are the massages and treatments available: watsu, Vichy shower, body wraps, aromatic and bamboo massages, hot stones spa therapy, and body care and facials. These include two large pools, the Minerva bath on the ground floor and the Royal bath on the rooftop, as well as a full range of aquatic massages. The suite perfectly complements the rest of the services offered by the spa. The Wellness Suite opened up earlier this year, replacing the existing four saunas at the Thermae Bath Spa in Bath, England. The second shower is called a chromotherapy experience, where mood-enhancing LED lights in the shower heads give the bather a “shower of color.” Both hot and cold showers are available. The room is decorated with Romanesque columns and mellow, pink lighting. Two types of showers are available, one with an overhead shower and the other with water jets coming out of the wall. The first has oxygenated water with a lemongrass scent. The final features of the Wellness Suite are the two shower rooms. The significance of this room is that William Herschel actually discovered the planet Uranus from his home in Bath, something I never knew before visiting this room. A large screen on the front wall plays clips of Earth as seen from the space station, and meditation music plays in the background. There is a sea breeze fragrance, and the walls have tiny lights to replicate a star field. ![]() Well, perhaps it’s not really a sauna, since the temperature is also ambient, but the tiled beds warmed me up to relax my muscles. The final sauna was the celestial relaxation room. It also reminds me of the time I had a sauna on a tiny island off the coast of Sweden, from which I was able to jump into the freezing Baltic sea a few feet away. It might not be the most popular room, and my dad walked right out, but I found it rather enjoyable. I spent several minutes massaging my knee with the ice, reminiscent of the ice massages I used to get as part of my physical therapy when I broke my knee several years ago. There was a large basin full of crushed ice which I could rub on my arms and legs to exfoliate my skin. Next was something really unique, at least in my experience – an ice chamber! The room had an ambient temperature and invigorating peppermint smell. The benches are made from Obeche wood, and there is a central wooden column decorating the room. There is a sandalwood scent in the air, while lime and acacia woods line the walls. Essentially, the infrared waves heat your body from the inside out, in contrast to traditional saunas. The room doesn’t feel as hot as the steam rooms, and it’s much easier to breathe, but I was pouring off sweat in no time. It was my first time in an infrared sauna, where panels on the wall warmed my body up to 55☌. The room is decorated in the style of the King Georges from the 18th century, complete with a fountain in the back of the room and windows looking out into a simulated Georgian garden. Also heated at 45☌, similar to the Roman steam room, wide marble seats allow you to breathe in the tea rose and jasmine scents while Mozart plays quietly in the background, soothing your nerves. ![]() The next room we entered was the Georgian steam room. The room has been decorated in a Roman motif (obviously), with lion heads on the walls and a mosaic of Sulis Minerva, the patron deity of the Roman Bath Spa, on the back wall. ![]() Mathematical analysis of the diffraction patterns produced by a circular aperture is described by the diffraction equation: sinθ(1) = 1.22(λ/d) Circular apertures produce diffraction patterns similar to those described above, except the pattern naturally exhibits a circular symmetry. However, all optical instruments have circular apertures, for example the pupil of an eye or the circular diaphragm and lenses of a microscope. ![]() Our discussions of diffraction have used a slit as the aperture through which light is diffracted. The wave-like nature of light forces an ultimate limit to the resolving power of all optical instruments. This is often determined by the quality of the lenses and mirrors in the instrument as well as the properties of the surrounding medium (usually air). The resolving power is the optical instrument’s ability to produce separate images of two adjacent points. This diffraction element leads to a phenomenon known as Cellini’s halo (also known as the Heiligenschein effect) where a bright ring of light surrounds the shadow of the observer’s head.ĭiffraction of light plays a paramount role in limiting the resolving power of any optical instrument (for example: cameras, binoculars, telescopes, microscopes, and the eye). This last interaction with the interface refracts the light back into the atmosphere, but it also diffracts a portion of the light as illustrated below. The beam, still traveling inside the water droplet, is once again refracted as it strikes the interface for a third time. As a light wave traveling through the atmosphere encounters a droplet of water, as illustrated below, it is first refracted at the water-to-air interface, then it is reflected as it again encounters the interface. The amount of diffraction depends on the wavelength of light, with longer wavelengths being diffracted at a greater angle than shorter ones (in effect, red light are diffracted at a higher angle than is blue and violet light). ![]() We can often observe pastel shades of blue, pink, purple, and green in clouds that are generated when light is diffracted from water droplets in the clouds. A good example of this is the diffraction of sunlight by clouds that we often refer to as a silver lining, illustrated in Figure 1 with a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This phenomenon can also occur when light is “bent” around particles that are on the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the light. The parallel lines are actually diffraction patterns. As the fingers approach each other and come very close together, you begin to see a series of dark lines parallel to the fingers. A very simple demonstration of diffraction of waves can be conducted by holding your hand in front of a light source and slowly closing two fingers while observing the light transmitted between them. ![]() In many cases, people just do not like pubic hair. Some feel it is more hygienic and makes them feel cleaner. Many believe it makes them more presentable or attractive, while others consider it a unique expression of themselves. Should you trim your pubic hair?Īs long as you do not have a medical condition where your doctor recommends hair removal, trimming or removing pubic hair is a personal preference, just as with facial, scalp, and body hair. Since dull blades can lead to skin nicks and ingrown hairs, replace the blades frequently. It must be cleaned after every use and every area being trimmed. Wipe down the trimmer with alcohol as well. Remove the trimmer blades and soak them for several minutes in 70% alcohol. Otherwise, you will breed bacteria and implant it into your hair follicles which will cause skin infections. Also, be sure to clean your trimmer properly after each use and after each area that you use it on to prevent the transfer of bacteria. You should bathe daily to remove dirt and bacteria from your skin and hair. If you choose to use the same one for both areas, be sure to practice good hygiene. By using your beard trimmer in your pubic area, it will wear out quicker. The introduction of different bacteria can upset the environments of the two different areas. Groins are sweaty and smelly areas by nature. Many groins harbor bacteria like Staphylococcus, which can be hard to eradicate. Even if you clean it appropriately, there is a chance you can transfer bacteria from your groin to your face since it was not professionally sterilized. Technically you can use the same trimmer for your beard and pubic area, but dermatologists would not recommend that. However, beard hair grows longer and thicker than pubic hair. ![]() Beard and pubic hair both begin growing after puberty. Player elimination is a pox upon any modern, enlightened board game–I’m looking at you, too, Risk–and if a game doesn’t keep you in all the way to the end, letting you make meaningful decisions (even if it’s only king-making), then it’s an unpleasant way to be spending an afternoon for all but the winner. The end of the game is a long, drawn out, unpleasant affair. Meanwhile, the last two players are still playing after 3 hours, exhibiting sheer bloody-mindedness, as one player slowly gains the upper hand, and one player sits around hoping to be a David against a monopolistic Goliath.
